USPTO to extend Green Technology Patent program

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is extending by a year its program that speeds up examination of pending Patent applications for eco-friendly inventions.

The program began a year ago and was scheduled to end on Dec. 8. It has accepted 790 petitions for the accelerated review, issuing 79 patents since it began. Looking at the figures, it is quite impressive because the average time before the first office action on a “green technology” application is 49 days which is significantly less than the typical 2.5 year wait.

“We’ve seen great results so far for those applications in the Green Tech program,” Director David Kappos said. “By doing so, we hope to help bring more green inventions to market, stimulate investment in green technology and create jobs.”

The agency aims to examine 3,000 applications under the program, which was modified in May, after issuing only nine patents, to ensure more approvals.

Other countries (not an exhaustive list)  that have accelerated examination procedures for green inventions include Canada, Great Britain , Australia and Japan
